Workplace Fire Safety: Knowledge and Preparedness in a Public Tertiary Healthcare Facility in Abia State, South East Nigeria

Background: Fire outbreak in a healthcare facility presents enormous challenge and need for rapid response. The purpose of this study was to examine fire safety (FS) knowledge workers preparedness measures Federal Medical Centre Umuahia, Nigeria.Methods: This cross-sectional involved 27 buildings 310 employees from different units departments, recruited by convenient non- probability sampling technique. A walk-through observational checklist self-administered questionnaire were used collect data which analysed with SPSS software, version 20. Association between FS respondents’ working experience training measured using χ2- test. P ≤0.05 assumed be statistically significantResults: highest proportion participants administrative staff 93 (30%), followed medical doctors 80 (25.8%) nurses 63 (20.3%). Only 28 (9.0%) had received on FS, 109 (35.2%) knew how operate extinguisher, while 139 (41.9%) the location extinguisher their workplaces. Twenty-six (8.4%) emergency number(s) call if occurs. 107 (34.5%) them good safety. Training significantly associated (p=0.026). All lacked necessary FS.Conclusion: level unsatisfactory hospital, may constitute serious threat patients. hospital management should implement regular programmes improve knowledge, as well put place other measures.
